вчера была обнаружена башня средневековой церкви, стоящая в абсолютной глуши, стадо диких оленей и 18 шаров для гольфа. оказывается, моя кошка совсем не против погулять с нами 15 километров.

что касается руин. мне очень нравится, что англичане трепетно относятся к архивам, и сохранением их часто занимаются любители-краеведы на волонтерской основе. благодаря работе этих людей мне не составило труда найти старинные фотографии и рисунки этого места (зеленоватый рисунок мой любимый, датируется 1850 годом, прямо перед тем, как в 1853 большую часть церкви снесли). также оказалось, что церковь существовала еще в нормандский период, то есть как минимум 900 лет назад, а возможно и раньше. сохранившаяся башня была пристроена в 15 веке, но благодаря такому интересному феномену как drought marks в летний период можно увидеть первичные очертания фасада -- почва над подземными остатками фундамента тоньше и вызывает засуху в этих местах. какое же чудо.
