SEPTEMBER 9: THE APOSTLE OF MAURITIUS Blessed Jacques-Desire Laval Priest Died: 1864 --- Bl. James Desiderius Laval was a French priest. Sent to the island of Mauritius, he dedicated himself to the evangelization of Africans who had been freed from slavery by law, but left to fend for themselves. His "incarnation" in the world of "negritude" led him to value the local culture and indigenous religiosity.
