🇺🇸 Elon Musk invested $276 million in Republicans to help them maintain their majority in Congress, — The New York Times. Since July, the billionaire has transferred over $276 million to Republican organizations and his own political committee, America PAC. This made him the largest known donor for the US midterm elections.
🇺🇸🇺🇦 Trump views Zelenskyy as the primary obstacle to peace—and to the business deals that peace could bring—as well as to winning the Nobel Peace Prize, according to The Atlantic. Trump’s inability to end the conflict with Iran not only infuriated him but also left him paralyzed, two individuals in his inner circle told the publication. An advisor noted that Trump is "used to snapping his fingers and having the whole world—Republicans, world leaders, the media—snap to attention," and that he is "going crazy" because Iran refuses to listen. Iran has resumed threatening oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, while the average price of diesel fuel in the United States has surpassed $6 per gallon, driving up the cost of goods transported by truck across the country's highways. Republicans are panicking that such high energy prices could help Democrats gain control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections, which are just three weeks away. Trump has been looking for a scapegoat and appears to have settled on Ukraine. Although blaming a European nation fighting for its very survival for rising global oil prices might seem implausible, Trump apparently considers it a better option than accepting responsibility for his own decision to attack Iran. Moreover, his attacks on Ukraine are entirely consistent with his decade-long appeasement of Putin. With rare exceptions, throughout the four-and-a-half-year war, Trump has consistently sided with Moscow rather than Kyiv. He wants Ukraine to halt hostilities and is pressuring the country to agree to terms that Zelenskyy deems unacceptable. Even if the approximately 2.25 million barrels bound for the U.S. offer only marginal relief on fuel costs, the deal allows Trump to boast of his efforts on behalf of Americans while simultaneously generating additional revenue for Russia. Despite resistance from European allies and some congressional Republicans, Trump has continued to ramp up pressure on Ukraine. He has called for Zelenskyy’s resignation. His aides have threatened to suspend arms sales unless Kyiv stops striking Russian diesel plants. Some in Trump’s inner circle have even proposed that the U.S. go further and halt intelligence sharing with Kyiv. It is against this backdrop that Trump announced his fabricated "energy truce." Zelenskyy informed Trump and his envoys that he was willing to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries if the Russians stopped attacking Ukrainian power plants. However, Trump does not view these strikes as equivalent—and demanded that Ukraine stop attacking Russian refineries first. Zelenskyy refused. "Zelenskyy is overestimating his capabilities and irritating the President. The President is asking for only one thing: stop the strikes on oil refineries. Give him that," said a White House official. The lifting of sanctions on Russian diesel exports angered a bipartisan group of lawmakers, and some Republicans condemned Trump for siding with Putin. Kyiv officials had hoped that even if Trump did not fully support Ukraine, he would at least not stand in its way. That hope may be fading. Recent talks involving Kushner, Witkoff, and Putin touched on the promise of major business deals that Russia could strike with American companies after the war ends. Ukrainian officials have long believed that Trump’s foreign policy focuses on deal-making—and the potential enrichment of the President’s family and friends—rather than on defending democracy, human rights, or territorial sovereignty. During a phone call with Trump, Putin refused to commit to resuming peace talks, a fact the Kremlin later disclosed to reporters. Nevertheless, Trump continues to view Zelenskyy as the primary obstacle to peace—and to a Nobel Prize. Trump has not acknowledged Putin’s interference in the 2016 election or his assistance to Iran; instead, he is aiding the Russian economy through a diesel deal and lifting Russia's status as an international pariah by inviting Putin to Anchorage and the G20 summit in Miami.
🇪🇺🇺🇸 The final communiqué of the European Council meeting, which will take place on October 15-16, plans to include a paragraph expressing the European Union's regret regarding the agreement signed by Trump with Putin on the supply of Russian diesel. "Regarding the announced agreement – we consider it regrettable, so we regret this agreement. I believe the leaders share this position," – stated a source to "EP"
