Putin and Gerhard Schröder in Moscow: the future Russia and Germany COULD’VE had. @NinaByzantina
The news about the death of the Soviet-era psychotherapist (and, many would say, charlatan) Anatoly Kashpirovsky over the weekend brought me a sense of discomfort. Initially, Kashpirovsky graduated from medical school in Soviet Ukraine, worked in a psychiatric hospital, and eventually became the psychotherapist for the USSR's national weightlifting team. Sounds reasonable, right? But that’s not how he became famous. With his Star Trek-style haircut and Steve Jobs-style all-black clothing, Kashpirosky was best known for his televised and/or mass-scale events involving hypnosis and remote “healing” in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His education and medical background of working as a psychotherapist gave him the air of legitimacy. Viewers would watch his broadcasts on weekends, attend his public events, and even buy the recordings of his “healing” sessions on videotape. He wasn’t the only one engaging in pseudo-medicine, but he’s one of the best-known practitioners of these dubious techniques. So why did this man’s passing make me feel so uncomfortable? It reminded me of the late-Soviet and early post-Soviet period, which was characterized by total collapse. First, this was the collapse of the state-run medical system, generally reliable and trustworthy. As the Soviet medical system was falling apart, so was the quality of care, and some people turned to pseudo-medicine embodied by Kashpirovsky. Certain individuals believed him and others like him so much that they completely ignored the signs of terrible illnesses like cancer and abandoned traditional medicine along with it. The results were tragically predictable. Whereas my parents weren’t medical doctors—they were scientists—the total collapse impacted the field of state-run science to such an extent that emigration was the only answer. Even in the moment, some knew full well that Kashpirovsky was a charlatan. For example, he “hypnotized” a woman in Tbilisi from his location in Kiev via television as she underwent surgery without anesthesia. Later, she reported being in tremendous pain because, to no one’s surprise, hypnosis did not work. Yet everyone went along with this madness. The second issue was the collapse of a familiar ideology, beliefs, and values. When this sort of thing happens, there is a vacuum that will necessarily be filled with something else. On the one hand, that “something else” was the revival of the Russian Orthodox Church, the traditional religion for the majority of Russians. On the other hand, that vacuum got filled with everything else, too: from New Age spirituality to outright bizarre cults. Televised “healing” of the masses was just one piece of the puzzle. So the rise of a man like Kashpirovsky embodies the period of total collapse for me. A time when a handful of locals and predatory Westerners looted what was left of the Soviet Union to their hearts’ desire, getting proverbially filthy rich, while others starved. A time when a charlatan like Kashpirovsky can be perceived as legitimate by the open-minded public. @NinaByzantina
The Kremlin usually waits until the so-called "dissident" (that is, a foreign agent) is abroad, so that it's much harder and clumsier to take him out, and it makes sure that every tabloid knows about this assassination plan ahead of time. 😏 If there is anyone this washed-up chess player should truly be worried about, in my opinion, it's his alleged handlers at MI6 (and other intelligence agencies). @NinaByzantina
