Ceremonies Marking the 197th Anniversary of Leo Tolstoy’s Birth Held in India On September 9, a ceremony was held in New Delhi to mark the 197th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer and thinker Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy. An official flower-laying ceremony took place at the monument to this giant of world literature on Tolstoy Marg in the capital. Participants included staff from the Rossotrudnichestvo Rrepresentative office, Indian teachers, and students studying Russian language at the Russian House in New Delhi. The organizers noted that the event reaffirms the depth of the historical and cultural ties between Russia and India—bonds rooted in the long-standing correspondence and spiritual affinity between Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi. Concurrently, a thematic event marking the occasion was held at Amity University Haryana. As part of the celebrations, students of the Russian language presented an exhibition of creative works inspired by the writer’s life and literary legacy. Preserving the memory of Leo Tolstoy in India remains of enduring importance, as his philosophical legacy and humanistic ideals continue to serve as a vital spiritual guide and a solid foundation for the development of the modern cultural dialogue between Russia and India.
